The last days in BA - shared with that legend Viviana Sacchero

It was coming up to the time to go home. Home would be a welcomed rest from living in bunk beds and out of a small backpack. But, I didn't realise till the time got closer how much I would really miss Argentina.

Time was spent with some returning legends. Yaron, Zachi, Stuart and all the dudes from the hostel. Ruben, Mariela, Bieri, Jose, Lidia, Rita, Nico, Solidad. Hope I haven't missed anyone out.

But, special mention must be made of Viviana! What a special person! :-) Now, I'm not just saying this because she wanted to be famous. :-) She shares all the Argentine passions I do! Des Nivel of course, being the most important. haha! But, even though she's Australian (had to add that!), she's got that special Argentinian blood in her genes that makes her great! Share the passion! Viv, I've reserved our place at Des Nivel for next year and real estate is looking very interesting!

Salta - Part II

This is the second installment in this exciting series on the north of Argentina. Yeah, whatever!

Salta - Part I

Well, finally here it is - the lowdown from my excellent time in Salta. Stayed at the must-stay Backpackers, and, for the first time on my trip, a hostel was practically more exciting than the place itself.

Mendoza and Córdoba

From San Martin, we took a bus on a six hour journey to Neuquen - a seemingly dead-end city in central Argentina that looked like something out of central US. From there I made my way to Mendoza and split up with the others who were making their way back to Buenos Aires.

The Lake District

Now this is a beautiful area. Who would have thought, that just beneath snow covered mountains would be the most amazing lakes around. And, good chocolate too!

From El Calafate I buzzed off to Bariloche. Again, taking the rich-man's option and flying. A last minute decision, having booked my ticket at midnight the night before the flight. The plane was better this time - a boeing, but flying over the Andes is still quite a hair-raising experience.

El Calafate, capital of the glaciers

From the end of the world I moved on to a place that seemed like it was at the end of the world. El Calafate is in the middle of nowhere, but beyond the town are scenes that are unbelievable.

From Ushuaia, after waiting for too long for a flight to avoid a massive bus-driven detour, I got a flight with LADE. They're cheap! But, with the low price seems come a lack of advanced flying machinery. The plane we flew on somehow made me feel that the Wright brothers would've been better pilots than the ex-airforce flyman we had at the stick. It was a Fokker F-28, well at least that's what it said on the window!

Ushuaia, El Fin Del Mundo

Ushuaia, The End of the World. It's crazy to think that I'm even here, so far from everything, but at the same time, still among those friendly Argentinians I'm met along the way.

Ushuaia is the world's southermost city and is in the province of Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire) in southern Argentina. Tierra del Fuego is split in two with Chile to the west and Argentina to the East. Antarctica is just a couple of thousand kilometres away.

Peninsula Valdez, Patagonia

Even though the bus ride can be gruelling, a visit to this part of Argentina is a must. The things to see are amazing and the relaxed atmosphere in the towns is really impressive.

Iguazu Falls

Simply put, this is one of the most amazing sites I have ever seen. The falls are huge! The enormity of the site is difficult to explain, but there is harldy one point where you can see the entire series of falls!

Argentinians are football crazy!

Yesterday was an eye-opener, and the most amazing experience. Went to watch football, or soccer as we know it. Independiente were playing Boca Juniors at Independiente.

The game was crazy and exciting! The crowd were even more crazy and exciting!

Buenos Aires - The food

Yes, it's important for us all, and me especially. The food in Buenos Aires is great and so damn cheap. Here are some good places to go.

In San Telmo there are loads of restaurants, parilleras, pizzerias, etc. And, they all make good food, and none of them are overly expensive.

Buenos Aires - What a Great City!

I arrived last week, Wednesday 1st September 2004 - spring day for those of us in South Africa. The flight was with Malaysian Airlines, and was in fact very pleasant, only, though, after they had unloaded 6 people (1 for being intoxicated, and 6 really dodgy looking people for having irregularities with their documentation!). The flight was just over 9 hours and apparently it´s only 7 on the way back.
